Tortuguero is one of the most important nesting sites in the world for green sea turtles, which find their way into the brown sand beaches every year. The national park protects not only the sea turtles nesting, but also the surrounding forests, canals and ponds. Because everything in Tortuguero is centered around the channel you can only get there by boat or by air. Its peaceful atmosphere and the feeling of being one of the most remote places on earth, attracts nature lovers from around the world. Although it is an ideal place to observe wildlife, the area has been able to manage and develop a system of low-density tourism.
