The city of Puerto Cortés, head of the Osa canton, Puntarenas, has played a vital role in the development of southeastern Costa Rica.
The port is a wharf for boats. This made possible the transit to the aborigines of the communities of Boruca and Térraba, who navigated by the Grande river of Térraba and the access of travelers that arrived from the Valley of the General by the route of Puntarenas when there were no terrestrial roads.
