At about 211 km. San Jose, the best way to get to the park is to take Highway Guapiles Limón and then go south to the village of Cahuita. The village continues 6km south along the road to the old town of Puerto Vargas Puerto Viejo, where is located the main entrance of the park. The best time to visit Cahuita National Park is during the months of March, April, September and October and that during these months is less when it rains. Being rainy almost all year, Cahuita National Park is a tropical moist forest area.

Covering a land area of only 1607 hectares, this national park protects about 22,400 acres of ocean and marine life and is one of the most beautiful regions of the country. The main attraction of the park is not their land but their under water world which is home to an impressive and fantastic marine life and coral reefs of Costa Rica’s largest. Tourists from around the world come in droves to this national park as it offers many opportunities for snorkeling and diving for its beautiful palm trees and white sand beaches and be of blue and crystal clear waters ideal for swimming.

Derived from the word “kawe” meaning mahogany and “ta” which means “point, Cahuita National Park is home of several ecological zones including forest swamps, rain forests, coastal forests and flora of the coast. Home to a wealth of marine life, some of the common people under the water are the sea urchin, queen angel fish, blue parrot fish, green turtles, eels, the barracudas, cocombros the marine shrimp, the lobsters, sponges, manta rays, the obstacles, 3 species of sharks and hawksbill turtles. Among the many land mammals are found in the lazy, the opossums, monkeys, frogs, bales, iguanas, basilisk, porcupines, and several species of birds including ibis, herons, gulls and fisherman.
