Arenal Volcano

The most violent of all the volcanoes in Costa Rica.

The Arenal volcano is located in northwestern Costa Rica, as part of the Cordillera de Guanacaste volcáncia. Is a cone-shaped stratovolcano with an elevation of approximately 1700 meters above sea level before 1968 was considered an extinct volcano.

1968 begins with a violent eruption in its west side. This flank was opened three explosion craters, the crater at 1050 m (July 1968 explosion), the crater B 1175 m elevation and the crater C with a height of 1460 m, in addition to these three craters open during 1968, D is the crater, with a height of 1633 m that existed before the beginning of this eruption.

The park has a very diverse flora and fauna, including its four areas of life: very humid tropical forest (transition), montane rainforest, montane rainforest low (transition), pre-wet forest (transition), which covers about a 47% of the area. Among the most conspicuous are: Guayabo mountain, Bait, Ceiba, Cirri, Laurel, Higueron, Fungi, guarumo, Balsa, different species of palms, heliconias, orchids, ferns and bromeliads including endemic species: Pitcaimia Funkiae. 
35 species of fish, 135 species of reptiles, including turtles, tepezcuinte, tapir, deer, jaguar, Sahin, pizotes, howler monkeys, red and white face, a variety of snakes. A surprising 53% of the species that constitute the population of birds live here, making this park a paradise for birdwatchers.
