But the laws do not allow it because it is proven that they love the food that humans give them and is not suitable for their health. It means that you have to limit yourself to see and admire them, just like the other wildlife species that abound in Costa Rica.
Of course, during a visit to a national park, such as Tortuguero, Monteverde, Corcovado or Manuel Antonio, go prepared with a camera and take home an emotional memory.
In Costa Rica, there are four species:
- The howler monkey: Also known as “congo monkey.” They usually live in small family groups of twelve members, including adults and babies. Their howls, which are heard at a great distance, serve to communicate with each other and delimit their territory. They are very common and the best places to see them are Manuel Antonio National Park, Tortuguero, Corcovado, and Arenal.
- The White-faced Monkey: It is considered the most intelligent primate of the American territory. The capuchin, also known as “capuchino,” lives in herds of up to 30 individuals and feeds on fruits, leaves, insects, eggs, crabs, and lizards. Although you can find them throughout the country, it is easier to see them in Manuel Antonio and Cahuita national parks.
- Spider Monkey: The ability of these animals is so great that, when they move around the trees, they seem to fly. They have more developed arms than legs and use the tail as a very useful limb. They eat fruits, nectar, leaves, and insects. They are easier to see in Corcovado, Tortuguero, and Monteverde.
- Squirrel Monkey: It is the cutest and smallest of the monkeys that exist in Costa Rica, characteristics for which there are still people who pursue them to have them as pets, without stopping to consider that they are causing their extinction. It is exclusive to the Osa Peninsula and the Manuel Antonio National Park.
Seeing, admiring and photographing these wonderful specimens of nature is comforting. Go and enjoy it, but move to the vicinity of their sanctuaries in a comfortable and safe vehicle.
