Barra Honda National Park

  Barra Honda hill, of about 300 meters high, consists of limestones of reef type, ie ancient reefs due to a merger sobrelevantamiento caused by tectonic faults, developed some 60 million years.

These reef formations were formed by blue and green calcareous algae, in addition to foraminifera, tiny marine protozoa covered by a calcareous shell, sponges and sea urchins.

Another important element of this area is its ability as a reserve aquiferous for populations that are located around it.

Barra Honda hill contains an extensive system of caverans independent from one another, of which 19 have been explored. Santa Ana is the cave 240 meters deep, constitute one of the most profound.

The most attractive and interesting are the velvet, the Tampa and Santa Ana, with a profusion of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, beads, flowers and needles of gypsum helicitas, popcorn, mushrooms, shark teeth and other formations.

Velvet is the cave that contains the greatest abundance in training. One of these is called the body and has the feature to give different sounds when struck with the softness.

Nico in the cave, were found a large quantity of human remains in 1970 and later, pre-Columbian Indian artifacts.

The park’s vegetation is mostly deciduous, some of the most common species are rum-rum, tempisque, El Jobo, Indian naked, the poroporo, the hen, the soncoya the guanacaste, the face, and arbutus ment of the comb.
