Project is presented in fair coffee this weekend

Axis of the new program will promote the development of tourism and trade, according to the municipality of Tarrazú

The area of ​​Los Santos, formed by the cantons of Tarrazú, Dota and Leon Cortes, this weekend launched the project to have a strategic development plan, which is the promotion of tourism and trade.

The idea this weekend will be launched during the fair Expocafé Tarrazú 2016, which will start on Friday March 4 at 11 a.m., and will run on Saturday and Sunday.

The region of Los Santos is characterized by the production of high quality coffee, which is held especially small producers grouped into cooperatives as Coopetarrazú, Coopedota and Coopellanobonito.

Local leaders in the region estimate that there are about 7,000 coffee producers and the total area is 12,000 hectares of this crop.

Bernardo Barboza, Tarrazú mayor explained that traditional activity mittee of the area will be used to begin shaping the regional strategic plan. He added that aims to develop the coffee and linked to the natural beauty of the region tourism and trade around those activities.
Saints owes its name to the headwaters cities of the cantons that form: Tarrazú San Marcos, Santa Maria de Dota and San Pablo de Leon Cortes.

Diversification. Growing and coffee processing is the most important economic activity in the area, which have developed numerous microbeneficios of small producers who export their coffee directly to markets like the US, several European countries, Japan, Korea and Australia. It is estimated that over 75% of production is exported to markets with higher quality than those of traditional markets prices.

The area has maintained a production of around 450,000 annual bushels of coffee berries, corresponding to an equal number of bushels or bags of 46 kilos of grain benefited, in contrast to all coffee growing in Costa Rica, whose production has been reduced by the last years.

Along with the great importance of coffee growing, cooperatives and municipalities in the region now seek to diversify economic activities with tourism and trade, highlighted Barboza.

Carlos Rivera, Coopetarrazú manager, explained that the fair will provide a framework to invite visitors to enjoy high quality coffee and to present the natural beauty of the area, as a start to the promotion of tourism.
