Among the many natural treasures that characterize the Costa Rican territory, there is the Ballena Marine National Park, a tombolo shaped like a whale’s tail which is visible at low tide as if announcing the presence of the whales that stop to rest of their constant mysterious journey from the Antarctica to Alaska.
The tombolo is a rock formation bordered by a coral reef, which is attached to the beach by a 700 meters long strip of sand visible at low tide. It is one of the iconic characteristics of the Ballena Marine National Park.
The Park is a Costa Rican protected territory with at least 85 endemic species: the blue heron, the white ibis and the sea hawk, in addition to the whales and the spotted and bottleneck dolphins visiting us almost all the year.
All these species can be seen from the beaches or, even better, they can be seen up close with the help of tour operators. It is an important event and attracts tourists from all over the world for the chance to see them so close.
