Do not want to go too “far”?
If you are in the Great Metropolitan Area and want to know something about the Costa Rican nature, you will not have to go too far since right there in the mountain range that borders the Central Valley on the north side, you will find two of Costa Rica’s most emblematic volcanoes: The Irazú and the Poás.
The Irazú volcano has five huge craters accessible by the public. It is only 51 km away from the city of San José and 31 km away from the city of Cartago. The Poás volcano is located 49 km away from San José. It has one of the largest craters in the world and an illustrative museum attended by park rangers.
In both volcanoes visitors can walk through trails and have close contact with nature as well as enjoy restaurants and sodas that offer true gastronomic pleasures.
Want to go to the beach and back?
Of course you want! Among the hundreds of beaches in Costa Rica, there are those of the city/port of Puntarenas located just 110 km away from San José -an hour and a half trip driving in a moderate speed-.
Also, in front of the Pacific Ocean is the attractive beach of Jacó, an excellent tourist destination located 117 km from San José and if you prefer to visit beaches, panoramas and truly spectacular mountain, there are those of Manuel Antonio, just over three hours from San José.
