The largest mangroves of Costa Rica can be found in the lower parts of the Grande de Térraba and Sierpe rivers; a territory where sea and sweet water creatures interact in an even larger wetland .
One may think that it’s an inaccessible territory. Νevertheless, it is a peaceful place where you can take on the adventure of making a relaxing boat trip, observing the mangroves and lagoons where several animal species live without fearing the presence of humans.
With almost 25 thousand hectares and an enormous biological diversity, the National Térraba/Sierpe Wetland is located in the canton of Osa, in the province of Puntarenas. You only need to make it to the tourist community of Sierpe or to the city of Puerto Cortés to start appreciating it at its very best, and if you so desire, to take a boat and make a tour.
A mangroves forest of different species; 81 species of molluscs, like the chuchecas, the pianguas and the boludo; 52 species of crustaceans, like shrimps; 87 species of fishes… a paradise for the tourist wishing to get in contact with nature.
