Costa Rica is an emblematic country that began to push towards the protection of the environment since the 70s, this initiative has allowed the country to develop a powerful industry based on ecological tourism.
In this small territory of just 51 thousand square kilometers, Costa Rica has 300 beaches, 34 protected zones (including national parks, biological reserves, wildlife refuges and one monument) and no less than 112 volcanoes, five of them active and some as beautiful and fascinating as the Arenal and the Irazú Volcanoes.
The vast majority of these natural treasures are accessible by roads and also the development of tourism infrastructure is something very common in most of these destinations so the visitor will have easy access to restaurants, hotels and all amenities.
Each of these places has its own characteristics, but for now we will mention five of the main tourist destinations located on the same Pacific coast route:
Tamarindo
Tamarindo is located in the beautiful province of Guanacaste, this tourist destination is full of beaches, adventures sports and fun. It also has a small city that offers visitors nocturnal activities and a varied gastronomy. This place is ideal for honeymoons, groups of friends and families. It’s located 240 kilometers away from the Juan Santamaría Airport (in the Central Valley) and only 78 kilometers away from the Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport, in Liberia, Guanacaste.
Monteverde
Monteverde is a cloud forest biological reserve that extends through more than eleven thousand hectares where the tourist can spot over 500 varieties of orchids, 400 species of birds, 490 species of butterflies and a hundred species of mammals. Among other attractions, the visitor will find the hanging bridge called “Wilford Guindon” surrounded by natural forest of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, moss and a long list of animal species.
The reserve is located 168 km away from San José and you can reach there by fairly accessible roads.
Manuel Antonio
The beaches of Manuel Antonio have been the Costa Rican tourist destination par excellence. The Park and the beaches are located 173 kilometers away from San José, in the canton of Quepos. There it is possible to see a surprising number of animals moving around the paths and palm trees that line the beach. Also for a very low price, you can enter the protected area, home of white-headed capuchin monkeys and marmosets; sloths, coatis, scarlet macaws, toucans and hundreds of species of flora and fauna.
Bahía Ballena
The Bahía Ballena National Park is a gift for your eyes and soul thanks to its splendid natural landscapes and its high concentration of whales and dolphins that come to reproduce. It is a nesting point for seabirds and there is an abundant presence of green iguanas. Its waters are suitable to do some kayaking, snorkeling, swimming and its beaches are a good place where to walk, sunbathe and ride a horse.
Bahía Ballena is 206 km away from San José, 61 km away from Quepos and only 55 km away from San Isidro de El General on the coastal road.
Corcovado
The Corcovado National Park is a natural forest with a surface of 46 thousand hectares located in the Osa Peninsula, the southeast of Costa Rica; It is a jungle with trees up to 70 meters, rivers, waterfalls and dream-like lonely beaches. It is the most amazing tourist destination in Costa Rica and it can be reached by land or air using the nearby airports.
